Mutant in paradise...

An elegant brugmansia seedling earns keeper status

I've been watching this brugmansia seedling perform for several years now and decided it was time to make it a keeper!

Wow, a giant 8 point golden Angel Trumpet!

With cooler weather settling in, more and more of my Angel Trumpet seedlings are blooming for the first time.  Every couple of days I come across one that just wows me.  Here's one that really caught my eye this week.  It is from a cross I made between Brugmansia Jazzy and Brugmansia America. What is really cool about these blooms is that both have eight points (corolla teeth).  Normally a corolla skirt will have five teeth, and sometimes 6.  Having 8 teeth on both open blooms is rather ...

An Angel Trumpet merged with a citrus tree

This beautiful Angel Trumpet seedling is also a carry over from last year.  It is the result of a cross I made between Brugmansia seedling (Jacayna x The Chief) #5 x Brugmansia America.Don't be confused by the citrus like foliage and what appears to be green fruit hanging nearby.  While I wish my hybridizing skills would allow me to cross a Brugmansia with citrus tree, this navel tree is just acting as a support structure for an overgrown plant in queue to be re-potted. So far all the blooms ...

A double orange Angel Trumpet with whiskers

This past week I have had several new yellow/orange Angel Trumpet seedlings bloom that show promise.  Here's one that made it to my watch list.  It is from a cross of Brugmansia (Bert x Unknown) x America.Unfortunately I do not have additional photos showing how the bloom matured because I sliced these open to harvest their pollen and then dust them with some other pollen. The final color ended up being a nice rich orange color.I have other seedlings from this same cross that should be ...

America & The Chief in one Angel Trumpet...Oh my!

Last week during my Brugmansia Bloomapalooza, I was greeted by an Angel Trumpet bloom that took my breath away.  It was on a seedling from a Brugmansia cross involving (Jacayna x The Chief) #5 x America. Brugmansia Jacayna x The Chief #5 is a nice single yellow/orange Angel Trumpet I grew out from seeds obtained from Liz Fichtl.  The golden blooms are similar to Orange Zest, another seedling from the same cross that was registered last fall.  America is an Alice Harris introduction and is ...

A pleasant find on a warm summer night...

My evening strolls through my field of Angel Trumpets is starting to get more exciting as more and more Brugmansia seedlings are setting buds and blooming for the first time.  During tonight's stroll I captured this picture of a nice double pink bloom I had been watching develop all week.  It is from a cross between Brugmansia Shooting Star and America. When I was making this cross I was hoping that Shooting Star's golden color would be carried over to America's beautiful form, but pink ...

Thumbs up for America's baby!

As you can see by the photo below, this new seedling has already earned a thumbs up!This bloom is from a cross I made involving Jamie's Monkey Business x America.  It bloomed for the first time last December and at that time the blooms were more orange.  The first set of blooms also had dropped skirts instead of the stuffed skirts I'm seeing now.  This does not surprise me because often it takes several bloom cycles for a new double to either get its act together or not.  Sometimes they ...

Some Angel Trumpet Monkey Business

Of course I'm referencing Angel Trumpet Jamie's Monkey Business, who happens to be the mother of this fine seedling. This seedling was the first one to bloom from a batch I have growing from the cross between brugmansia Jamie's Monkey Business x Angel's Moonlight.  At one point all the tendrils were pointing straight up, but now they are becoming a bit more relaxed.I'm awaiting a big surprise this week when this seedling's neighbor, a seedling from Jamie's Monkey Business x America, first ...
