Mutant in paradise...

Last season I ramped up my brugmansia hybridizing efforts using brugmansias with mutant and deeply serrated foliage.  The results of those...

An elegant brugmansia seedling earns keeper status

I've been watching this brugmansia seedling perform for several years now and decided it was time to make it a keeper!

Working Towards A Golden Lizzy Angel Trumpet

When I first spotted this Angel Trumpet bloom I thought it was coming from an Angel's Gold Face plant.  I was totally surprised when I checked the plant tag and saw that it was actually a seedling from a cross I made between Brugmansia Lizzy x Orange Zest. Both parents have The Chief in their parentage and it looks like its golden multi-skirt genes prevailed.  Let's hope The Chief's bad traits were not passed on.  The Chief was a short lived cultivar that went into a quick decline.  At the ...

An Angel Trumpet merged with a citrus tree

This beautiful Angel Trumpet seedling is also a carry over from last year.  It is the result of a cross I made between Brugmansia seedling (Jacayna x The Chief) #5 x Brugmansia America.Don't be confused by the citrus like foliage and what appears to be green fruit hanging nearby.  While I wish my hybridizing skills would allow me to cross a Brugmansia with citrus tree, this navel tree is just acting as a support structure for an overgrown plant in queue to be re-potted. So far all the blooms ...

A double dose of genes from Angel Trumpet "The Chief"

This week I had one of my second generation crosses involving Brugmansia Lizzy bloom.  The cross is Lizzy x Orange Zest, both of which have "The Chief" as a father.  .Lizzy came from a cross between Brugmansia Rubirosa x The Chief, and Orange Zest is a Jacayna x The Chief cross.  Both  were introduced and registered this past year.I was hoping some of Orange Zest's color would transfer over to a Lizzy style bloom, but instead the outcome was a rather simple double white Angel Trumpet.  The ...

Angel Trumpet Lizzy puts on a show

Brugmansia Lizzy is one great brug!  It blooms more than any double/triple brugmansia I have in my collection...and I have lots.  Here are a couple of photos I shot last night.  Despite having 3 consecutive days of record setting high temperatures, the blooms still look fresh. Lizzy is an Angel Trumpet that I grew from seed and registered last year. It came from a Liz Fichtl cross involving Brugmansia Rubirosa x The Chief.  The plant is a vigorous grower and has stayed pest free.  I hope to ...

America & The Chief in one Angel Trumpet...Oh my!

Last week during my Brugmansia Bloomapalooza, I was greeted by an Angel Trumpet bloom that took my breath away.  It was on a seedling from a Brugmansia cross involving (Jacayna x The Chief) #5 x America. Brugmansia Jacayna x The Chief #5 is a nice single yellow/orange Angel Trumpet I grew out from seeds obtained from Liz Fichtl.  The golden blooms are similar to Orange Zest, another seedling from the same cross that was registered last fall.  America is an Alice Harris introduction and is ...

A tail of two Angel Trumpet Chiefs

Actually I'm referencing two siblings from The Chief, a legendary but short lived Angel Trumpet.  Today's featured Angel Trumpet seedling is from a cross between brugmansia seedling (Jacayna x The Chief) #6 x (Jacayna x The Chief) #7.  Jacayna x The Chief #6 was recently registered and named as 'Orange Zest'.  When it comes to plant breeding, incest is common place. By crossing seedlings from a single cross back to each other you improve the odds of achieving whatever it was you were hoping ...

Wow, this Angel Trumpet made me think Santa came early

If you asked Santa for a nice double pink Angel Trumpet for Christmas, you would certainly be pleased to receive this one.  For a first bloom, this one was awesome. The color of this bloom was an unexpected outcome from a cross between brugmansia (Jacayna x The Chief) #5 x America.  The JACH5 seedling that produced this seedling was a bright yellow-orange single and America is one of my favorite double whites.  Here's a photo of the two parents together. This is why hybridizing brugmansia is ...

This Angel Trumpet has piqued my curiosity....

This Angel Trumpet seedling's bloom has a striking resemblance to the first blooms of another seedling involving The Chief that I recently registered. That cross was featured here back in October.  I named it Lizzy and it was an offspring from a cross involving brugmansia Rubirosa x The Chief. Today's featured Angel Trumpet is from a cross of Brugmansia Pink Smitty x The Chief.  It is too early to tell if I have another winner on my hands. The first bloom, pictured below, was a triple. It ...
