An elegant brugmansia seedling earns keeper status

I've been watching this brugmansia seedling perform for several years now and decided it was time to make it a keeper!

A rain catching Angel Trumpet

A couple of weeks ago I featured a nice double pink Angel Trumpet from a cross I made involving Brugmansia Cherub x (Pink Smitty x Miss Ellie #1).  Here's another promising seedling from that same cross. The blooms are the same soft pink color as the other seedling and are thick in texture.  Like its mother, this seedling loves our Florida weather. As you can see this seedling likes to display its blooms in an upward position.  This may be a desirable trait for a potted plant but I'm not sure ...

Brugmansia Pink Smitty with a Lemon Twist

Angel Trumpet Lemon Twist has a rather unique Aurea style bloom that enticed me to use it in a bunch of crosses back in 2009.  Here is the results from one of those crosses, Brugmansia 'Lemon Twist' x 'Pink Smitty'.Like its mother, this seedling has waxy, horizontal style blooms.  As you can see by the photos, the blooms are a very soft pink with just a hint of yellow.  It will be interesting to see how the color develops over the next couple of bloom cycles.I have a few more seedlings from ...

Orange Sunshine flirts with Pink Smitty

I finally was rewarded with some color from my cross of Brugmansia Orange Sunshine x Pink Smitty.  This new Angel Trumpet seedling has a striking resemblance to Brugmansia Jazzy.   This particular cross was one I decided to grow the entire seed pod out so I could see the diversity in a single cross.  Out of the 20 or so seedlings that have already bloomed, most have been white.  I have only kept one in my watch zone so far, a double light orange.  I think I'll carry this one over as well and ...

Look at the curves on this Angel Trumpet

This is one smooth Angel Trumpet bloom.  The cross is Brugmansia Pink Smitty x an unknown pollen parent. The blooms are slightly smaller than an average sized Angel Trumpet bloom and are long lasting with a mild fragrance.  So far the plant has remained below four feet tall.  I carried this Brugmansia seedling over from 2009 and I plan to hold on to it for at least another year.I'll most likely cross it back to its mother this winter just to see if I can create a pillow-like double.

Another pink Angel Trumpet to watch in 2011

When I first started growing Angel Trumpets from seed, I expected most to turn-out to be single whites that would eventually have to be composted....at least that is what I read on all the brugmansia forums.  For the first two years that was not the case as pink prevailed and was the dominate color in my seedlings.  One single pink I carried over from last year was this seedling from a cross involving Brugmansia Earth Angel x Pink Smitty,What I really liked about it was its soft pink color ...

The many faces of an Angel Trumpet cross

As I have mentioned before, the Angel Trumpet cross between brugmansia Orange Sunshine x Pink Smitty is one where I am growing out an entire seed pod so that I can document the wide variety of blooms a single cross will produce.  I can't remember the exact count, but I know I have well over 100 seedlings from this cross growing.  So far most of the seedlings that have bloomed from this cross have been single or double whites.  None have earned a spot in my keeper zone, but a few are worthy ...

This Angel Trumpet has piqued my curiosity....

This Angel Trumpet seedling's bloom has a striking resemblance to the first blooms of another seedling involving The Chief that I recently registered. That cross was featured here back in October.  I named it Lizzy and it was an offspring from a cross involving brugmansia Rubirosa x The Chief. Today's featured Angel Trumpet is from a cross of Brugmansia Pink Smitty x The Chief.  It is too early to tell if I have another winner on my hands. The first bloom, pictured below, was a triple. It ...

A monster Angel Trumpet illuminates the night

While we still have a couple of days until the full moon, this Angel Trumpet was glowing under the moonlit sky when I made my rounds tonight.  It's another seedling from the cross between  brugmansia Orange Sunshine and Pink Smitty.  The only thing special about this bloom is that it is a monster.  The face of the bloom has to be at least 12 inches across!
