Mutant in paradise...

Last season I ramped up my brugmansia hybridizing efforts using brugmansias with mutant and deeply serrated foliage.  The results of those...

An elegant brugmansia seedling earns keeper status

I've been watching this brugmansia seedling perform for several years now and decided it was time to make it a keeper!

Being charmed by Brugmansia Pink Charm

Another Angel Trumpet that is putting on a summer show right now is Brugmansia Pink Charm.  While the color is not quite as dark as it would be in cooler weather, it makes up for it with the quantity of blooms.  Pink Charm also has a very pleasant scent that permeates our thick summer nighttime air. Brugmansia Pink Charm is a Monika Gottschalk Hybrid grown out from seed by Shirley Moor.  I have a bunch of seedlings with Pink Charm in the parentage that I expect to see bloom later this year. ...

Velvet Lady is quite the lady....

Everyday I'm finding more and more of my Angel Trumpets forming buds or coming into bloom, despite the record breaking heat we are encountering.  Brugmansia Velvet Lady is one cultivar that is thriving in the heat.  Below you can see a young Velvet Lady showing off its first mini-flush.The blooms on Velvet Lady hold up well in the heat and rain.  Many of the other whites I have in my collection start spotting after day one in the summer.  But as you can see, even the tendrils on Velvet Lady ...

A Golden Brugmansia to brighten up your day

Many of my Brugmansia seedlings devastated by this past winter's freeze are finally starting to bloom.  It is amazing how resilient these plants can be.   One that really caught my attention tonight was this beautiful seedling from a cross between Orange Zest and an unknown cultivar.Orange Zest is a new cultivar I introduced and registered last fall.  It came from a cross Liz Fichtl made between Jacayna and The Chief.  These blooms have a strong resemblance to those of Orange Zest, but are ...

A golden Angel Trumpet orphan

Today's featured Angel Trumpet is an orphan, meaning I have no idea who its parents are.  I wish I knew because this brugmansia is a real beauty. This is just one of many brugmansia seedlings I have that are either missing a tag, or the cross was unknown when I grew the seeds out.  Although knowing the parentage is great, it is not a deal breaker when it comes down to deciding which seedlings are going to be carried forward in my breeding program.  This seedling is certainly one i will carry ...

Orange, but not orange enough!

I'm not sure what to think of this new Angel Trumpet seedling.  It is a cross of brugmansia Bernstein x New Orleans Lady.If it had the bright orange color of brugmansia Bernstein it would be a winner for sure.  Better yet, a new Orleans Lady style bloom with Bernstein's color!  Maybe a cross back to its parents will do the trick?

An Angel Trumpet proves its points

Good thing the tendrils on this Angel Trumpet bloom are not sharp!  Today's featured brugmansia seedling is from a cross of Apricot Reise x Rubirosa.  With its long pointed tendrils and rather industrial looking bloom, this seedling better calm down and smooth things out if it wants to survive in the competitive single pink keepers division.

Angel Trumpet Orange Sunshine warms up my day

One of my primary hybridizing goals when I was making crosses last season was to try and create some new double orange and yellow Angel Trumpets. I'm finally starting to see the results of those crosses and my pool of double yellow/orange seedlings to work with is starting to grow,  Within this group I'm hoping a few winners will surface, even if it takes a couple more generations of crosses to achieve this goal.  Today's featured seedling is one that may show some potential in future ...

The many faces of an Angel Trumpet cross

As I have mentioned before, the Angel Trumpet cross between brugmansia Orange Sunshine x Pink Smitty is one where I am growing out an entire seed pod so that I can document the wide variety of blooms a single cross will produce.  I can't remember the exact count, but I know I have well over 100 seedlings from this cross growing.  So far most of the seedlings that have bloomed from this cross have been single or double whites.  None have earned a spot in my keeper zone, but a few are worthy ...
