Mutant in paradise...

Last season I ramped up my brugmansia hybridizing efforts using brugmansias with mutant and deeply serrated foliage.  The results of those...

An elegant brugmansia seedling earns keeper status

I've been watching this brugmansia seedling perform for several years now and decided it was time to make it a keeper!

America & The Chief in one Angel Trumpet...Oh my!

Last week during my Brugmansia Bloomapalooza, I was greeted by an Angel Trumpet bloom that took my breath away.  It was on a seedling from a Brugmansia cross involving (Jacayna x The Chief) #5 x America. Brugmansia Jacayna x The Chief #5 is a nice single yellow/orange Angel Trumpet I grew out from seeds obtained from Liz Fichtl.  The golden blooms are similar to Orange Zest, another seedling from the same cross that was registered last fall.  America is an Alice Harris introduction and is ...

Angel Trumpet Jazzy show's her influence over Naughty Nick

Here's another seedling from a cross I made between Brugmansia Jazzy x Naughty Nick.  This Angel Trumpet is a sibling to the Brugmansia Jazzy x Naughty Nick seedling pictured in my previous post and was in bloom at the same time.  As you can see, this Angel Trumpet has a very strong resemblance to its mother, Brugmansia Jazzy. It has Jazzy's form and Naughty Nick's color.  I plan to cross this one back to Naughty Nick next month to see what the outcome will be.

Pretty in Pink, an Angel Trumpet seedling with promise

Now that summer is winding down, my Angel Trumpets are gearing up for the fall Bloomapalooza.  I must have captured photos of at least a dozen new promising Angel Trumpet seedlings in bloom for the first time tonight.  Here's one that grabbed my attention right away.  The bloom is from a cross involving Brugmansia Butterfly x Day Dreams. Besides having nicely shaped blooms, this seedling also had lush, green foliage with no evidence of pest or disease problems.  The blooms are medium in size ...

Still watching my neopolitan Brugmansia seedling

Almost two years ago I posted photos of an Angel Trumpet seedling I was growing that had rather unique pink and green coloration.  The cross was Brugmansia Painted Lady x Sam and I believe the hybridizer was Gary Morales.  Here's a photograph taken back in fall of 2008 that shows the unusual coloration. As the bloom matured it still kept the green in its coloration.  I thought the blooms were quite striking at that time.  After seeing the green continue even after a couple of bloom cycles, I ...

A delightful triple Brugmansia that loves the heat!

Here's an Angel Trumpet seedling carried over from my 2009 "watch zone" that has been blooming non-stop for the past month.  My watch zone is an area where I place seedlings that show great potential for future breeding or commercial release.  This little cutie is a Brenda Delph (Seedsprout) cross between Brugmansia New Orleans Lady and (Angel's Flight x Charming).Last year the majority of the blooms were double with an occasional triple.  This year all the blooms have been compact triples. ...

Golden Angel Trumpets illuminate the night

I usually take a midnight stroll through my Brugmansia forest before I head to bed and hardly a night goes by when I'm not greeted by a surprise bloom.  The survivors from last year's crop of seedlings have rebounded and are beginning to reward me with beautiful blooms.  Here's a seedling that caught my attention when its golden blooms lit up the sky during our recent full moon.  This Angel Trumpet seedling is from a cross I made between Brugmansia Ludger's Windsong and (Color Point x Double ...

A Brugmansia good enough to eat!

Just kidding, you definitely do not want to eat an Angel Trumpet bloom, no matter how delicious it may look.  Here's a photograph of Brugmansia Lizzy that reminds me of a strawberry ice cream cone - yum!Lizzy just loves our Florida weather.  I think when brugs are born and raised in the heat, they perform better in the heat.  I see brugmansia enthusiasts from the north comment on how all their brugs look like wet tissue paper in the summer heat.  When I go for stroll through my ...

Lady Liberty has great timing...

I was sorting through a bunch of Brugmansia photos I took this past week and I just realized that Lady Liberty was blooming on the 4th of July...how appropriate!  Having been knocked down by the freeze this past winter, this was Lady Liberty's first bloom of the year.Brugmansia Lady Liberty is a Brenda Delph hybrid from a cross involving Creamsickle and Insignis Solid Gold. I have lots of seedlings growing with Lady Liberty as the pod parent that have yet to bloom.  I had a ...
